8 out of 10 adults will experience back pain at some point during their lives and one in five people visits their GP in any given year because of it. Following recent research, the NHS suggests that yoga can be helpful in managing the condition: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/back-pain/
For this workshop, Amy will lead a gentle, therapeutic practice which is suitable for all levels of experience including beginners and those with general aches and pains (not only in the back.) We will explore passive release poses to release tension, organic movements to gently mobilise and poses to rebalance and strengthen. The aim of the workshop is to provide students with tools for a safe self-practice and to increase body awareness both on and off the mat through an introduction to the anatomy of the spine and understanding of posture, spinal health and how to maintain it.
Amy has severe scoliosis and underwent spinal surgery as a teenager and originally turned to yoga to manage the chronic pain associated with the condition. She has been practicing yoga for 20 years and has studied yoga for back care with Adelene Cheong for over 10 years and is a certified Yoga For Scoliosis Fundamentals Teacher.
Not suitable for first trimester. As with any yoga practice, you are responsible for your own body when in class. If in doubt please speak to the teacher who will give general advice amidst a group atmosphere but cannot provide one-on-one consultation, diagnosis or therapy. Students are encouraged to take notes if it is helpful.
